Children’s Bath Bombs

Here’s why children’s bath bombs help your kids scrub a-dub-dub!

If you’ve yet to witness this phenomenon, hop to it.

Some little’uns get sticky, mucky and despairingly dirty but behave when it’s time to bathe. Yet, for those who reject the call, we prescribe our children’s bath bombs. Whilst a lucky few might have kids who find bathing a treat, others will run in the opposite direction to the tub. Fortunately, we know that most kids are simply OBSESSED with children’s bath bombs. Our friends and family are always asking for them as a stocking filler, and rightfully so.

They’re fun.
They’re fizzy.
They’re fun-tastic.

. . . and they’re a great way of convincing kids to hop in the tub. It may only take a couple of seconds for kids to get grubby in the garden or become Picasso with a pen, but it can feel like a lifetime to get them clean. By adding a fun element to bath time, the intrigue and sense of wonderment as they soothe, relax, dissolve and dilute the water is astounding. If you’ve yet to bear witness to it, get to it. Children’s bath bombs are somewhat of a revelation when getting our kids squeaky clean.

How do you use children’s bath bombs?

Sit tight – because we’re about to drop the bomb.

By now, you’ve probably heard of children’s bath bombs. They can come in a range of shapes – be they spherical or novelty – and look pretty darn nifty (if we say so ourselves). HOWEVER, the real magic happens when you drop them in the tub. Watch as your water transforms from clear and boring into something glittery and colourful. Now, depending on how much water you use in your bath, you can use one or two or how many ever you want, really – it’s that simple. Alright, so we have our children’s bath bomb, and this is how you use it. You take it out of the wrapper – and you just drop it into your water.

If you’re lucky, you might hear a snap, crackle or pop.

So, we’ve established that children’s bath bombs are tons of fun but have you ever wondered how bath bombs work? They’re a great way of introducing fun ingredients to an already pretty awesome bath time experience. In reacting with the water, it releases fun things like shea butter, Epsom salt and the other ingredients that lay inside. First inspired by Alka Seltzer tablets – a fizzing hangover cure – the initial bath bomb was shaped like a cartoon bomb. However, with the emergence of 3D printing, children’s bath bombs now come in tons of different shapes and sizes.

Sound familiar?

Is your child vehemently determined that they will absolutely, 100% not be having a bath today (even if they have to go without dinner)?

You might be inclined to manhandle them into the tub – or worse; you might feel pressured to relent. After all, who lets their kids go hungry?

If this sounds like you, hold the brakes! Children’s bath bombs are a brilliant way of convincing your little ones to get clean while having fun.

Okay, so what exactly goes into children’s bath bombs?

There are two components that make a bath bomb; an acid and a carbonate base.

For example, some bath bombs contain citric acid from citrus fruits (although this is usually synthetic). In addition to this, sodium bicarbonate or baking soda helps make it look pretty and smell good. There are also pigments, fragrances and other ingredients to make your skin feel nice – like oils and butter. Yet ALL these ingredients get mixed together, and then the Bath, Bubble & Beyond team get together and presses the mixture into a mould. We press the two halves of the mould together – not too hard – and then . . . wait 24 hours.

Then we take the mould apart and . . . voila! We have our children’s bath bombs!

The acid in the base of the solid is really important in making the bath bomb. If you know the volcano experiment – with vinegar and baking soda – you’ll know what happens when the acid and carbonate base is wet – it fizzes straightaway. That’s because the acid in the vinegar is ionised. That means that the hydrogen ions in the acid can collide with the hydrogen carbonate ions in the base. This produces carbon dioxide gas which we see as fizzy bubbles.

But the bath bomb’s citric acid is intact until water comes along and frees the ions, and they can’t react.

Yet, when we add water, they can mix at a microscopic level and produce gas. The fizzing means that the bath bomb disperses faster and – combined with the heat from your bath water – this helps the fragrance fill the air. This is also why you should keep your bath bombs in a dry place. So, probably not just in the open in your bathroom as moisture in the air can make the acid in the base react prematurely. This means you will run out of carbon dioxide by the time you put it in your bath.
